Indonesia è termine con cui si indica uno stato insulare del Sud est Asiatico. Le isole dell'arcipelago giacciono sulla linea equatoriale e vanno dall'Oceano Indiano a quello del Pacifico.

Regioni

L'Indonesia, pur essendo uno stato insulare, è incredibilmente vasto. Basterebbe pensare che sono state catalogate 18110 Isole le cui coste si sviluppano per un totale di 108000 Km. La distanza tra Aceh e Papua è di circa 4000 Km quanta intercorre tra New York e San Francisco. L'Indonesia è anche un paese di vulcani; ne sono stati contati oltre 400 di cui 130 ancora attivi. Parecchi sono poi i vulcani sommersi. Papua è l'isola più estesa dell'arcipelago e seconda per superficie nella classifica mondiale.

Sumatra — Un'isola di vulcani (90 di cui una dozzina ancora attivi) e di vallate coperte da una ricca vegetazione.

Major tourist destinations

Indonesia's World Heritage Site (UNESCO): Borobudur and Prambanan Temple, Sangiran Early Man site (Central Java), Komodo National Park (Nusa Tenggara), Ujung Kulon National Park (Banten), Lorentz National Park (Papua), Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra.

• Anyer - beautiful beach on Banten province. Near Mt. Anak Krakatau and the beautiful Ujung Kulon national park.
• Bali - a beautiful island with great culture and art.
• Borobudur - an ancient Buddhist stupa and temple complex on Central Java province.
• Bunaken sea garden - beautiful sea garden on North Sulawesi province. Website: Bunaken sea garden.
• Yogyakarta - beautiful palace, Malioboro street, etc. In May 2006, there was a strong earthquake in Yogyakarta. Several hotels were closed.
• Lombok - east of Bali. Beautiful beaches.
• Prambanan - the largest Hindu temples outside India. At present, Prambanan is closed for public, because it was damaged by strong earthquake (May 2006).
• Tana Toraja - beautiful view and culture. Located at South Sulawesi, close to conflict areas (Poso and Palu).
• Tangkuban Perahu - beautiful active volcano caldera on West Java province, near Bandung.
