Understand
The name of the city derives from the name of the pool around the Golden Temple (aka Harmandir Sahib) and means holy pool of nectar (Amrit: nectar; Sar: (short for sarovar) lake) .
The Sikhs are rightfully very proud of this city and their Gurdwara (place of worship), which is very beautiful and unique. The spiritual and cultural centre of the Sikh Religion, the Golden Temple, also known as Sri Harmandir Sahib was initiated by the fourth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Ramdaas Ji and completed in 1601 by his successor Guru Arjan Dev Ji. It is now a major travel and tourism centre for many foreigners.
