Assen [1] is the capital of the province of Drenthe in the Netherlands.
There is not much reason to go to Assen on itself. Every year TT Assen is being held here. Motorcycle enthusiast from all over the world will come to here to race and party. This turns Assen into a vibrant city for only a couple of days, after which it will go back to sleep again.
Assen is most useful as a transport hub. Many buses to small villages start their run in Assen.

Take a train from Schiphol Airport or Amsterdam, or from Groningen.
By bus
Many buses straddle the countryside. Assen is a hub in this network. Assen is connected to Stadskanaal by bus.
Get around
The city center of Assen is small enough to go on foot.
See
There is not much to see in Assen. If you have to spend some time in Assen, visit the Drents Museum. Drents Museum, Brink 1. Tel: 0592-377773. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm. During public holidays also on Mondays. Internet: http://www.drentsmuseum.nl/. The museum has an interesting collection of local as well general art, nicely exhibited.
