From Wikitravel
Baikal-Amur Mainline, BAM (Russian: Байкало-Амурская Магистраль, БАМ).
Second, after Trans-Siberian Railway line that crosses Russia West to East. Splits from Trans-Siberian Railway at Taishet, some 700 km West of Baikal lake, and pass the Baikal from the North at Severobaikalsk. Then go parallel to Trans-Siberian Railway all the way to Pacific Ocean. You can expect great landscapes, admirable views on Baikal lake and a lot of high bridges and tunnels.
Railway was build between 1930 and 1984 and on the most of its length is single track. It is not fully electrfied too. BAM was huge Soviet project, and workers from all parts of Soviet Union were brought to construct it. While travelling on the train pay attention to station buildings. Often they symbolize (look, architecture) the region where workers that build the section came from. Many of these workers married and staied there, so you can find settlers from distant parts of former Soviet Union along the line. In ??? there where rumor about construction of second track and another wave of workers came seeking work, and remained. Construction didn't start.
Sometimes train stops at turnouts in the middle of nothing to let the train from other direction pass. There are a few passenger trains going from Moscow all the way to Pacific, many local trains, the main "traffic" are wood transports from Siberia forests.
