Gaza City (alternatively, simply Gaza; Arabic غزة Ġazzah; Hebrew עזה ʿAzza) is the largest city (population approximately 400,000) within Gaza (The Gaza Strip), part of the Palestinian Territories, and its local capital - the city is frequently termed "Gaza City" in order to distinguish it from the larger Gaza Strip.

Understand

At the heart of modern Gaza lies the original mound of ancient Gaza, a succession of cities now largely built over by modern housing. Originally a Canaanite city, Gaza became the capital of the Egyptian administration of Canaan during the period of the New Kingdom Empire in Western Asia.

Gaza first became a Muslim city in 635, when it was captured by the Arabs. The city was taken by Crusaders in the 1100s and recaptured by Muslims in 1187.

Get in

• Erez Checkpoint is the only point of entry into the Gaza Strip from Israel and the closest to Gaza itself.
• Rafah Crossing by the city of Rafah is an entry point from Egypt.

Other points of entry into Gaza are only for the entry and exit of goods, and are not available for traffic, local or foreign.
