Guelph [1] is nicknamed The Royal City, since its name comes from the imperial House of Guelph that once ruled Great Britain. The city is home to the University of Guelph.

Get in

From HWY 401, exit 295, Hwy 6 North, the 'Hanlon Expressway'; for downtown, exit at Wellington St., to Wyndham; for University of Guelph, exit at Stone Road, or College Road to Gordon St.

Alternatively, exit 299, Brock Rd, (or 'old Hwy 6') north through the village of Aberfoyle, becomes Gordon St at University of Guelph, to downtown Wyndham St.

From Hwy 6, Hamilton and Niagara, alternatively continue through the villages of Morriston and Aberfoyle via Brock Rd ('old Hwy 6'), or from Morriston, HWY 401 West to exit 295, Hwy 6 North 'The Hanlon Expressway'.

ViaRail operates trains to/from Toronto. The ViaRail station is in on Wyndham St. in downtown Guelph.

Greyhound operates buses to/from Toronto. Guelph Bus Terminal is in on Macdonel St. in downtown Guelph

Coach Canada operates buses to/from Hamilton.

Get around

Guelph Transit operates buses around the city.

Two main taxi companies: Canadian Cab (88 MacDonnell Street 519-824-3110) and Red Top Taxi (77 MacDonnell Street 519-821-1700).

Do

Downtown rep cinema The Bookshelf shows slightly more unusual movies than elsewhere and also has a cafe, restaurant, bar and bookstore in the same building.

Buy

Bookshelf is on Quebec Street. Macondo Books (18 Wilson Street) is a used bookstore a couple of blocks away. Toko sells Dutch foods (118 Wyndham Street North).

Eat

Excellent South Asian food at Bollywood Bistro (photo) downtown (51 Cork Street East) and Latin American snacks at Salsateria (45 Cork Street East 519 824 0244 - closes at 7pm weekdays). The Cornerstone (1 Wyndham Street North) has vegetarian food, beer and coffee.
