Klaipeda is a town in the southwestern corner of Lithuania. Originally founded by baltic tribes, the city and castle was build by German knights and called Memel. Memel was part of Prussia and heavy fights with lithuanian lords took place. Besides invasions from Sweden and Russia the city was mainly part of the Prussian Kingdom and a prosperous harbour town. After Germany lost the World War I Lithunia gained independence (under partial french mandate) but Memel stayed under an autonomous German administration. After Germany lost World war II the Soviet Union annexed Lithuania and Memel was renamed Klaipeda. Since the independence in 1990 Klaipeda wants to come back as the lithuanian harbour and a tourist destination for families.

It is the gateway to the Curonian Spit, a sand bar something like 100 km in length and 4 km in breadth that arcs down to the Kaliningrad region of Russia.
