Montañita is a small village on the Pacific coast in Ecuador. Don't expect a tranquil fishing village - Montañita means flipflops, bars, artesenatos and surfboards, but it's still small enough to be pleasant.

Get in

Every 15 or 20 minutes busses on their way to Manta in the north or Santa Elena in the south stop to pick up passengers. In Santa Elena you can change busses to Guayaquil. There are also four direct busses to Guayaquil a day.

See

You can hitchhike to the mountains behind, and do some climbing to get to the top. The point is amazing, and if you go at the right time of year, you can see some surf competition.

Do

Montañita has the best surf in Ecuador, especially in December and January, with waves of up to three meters. There are several places to rent boards - prices are 4$ per hour, 8$ per half day or 15$ for a full day. A one hour lesson costs $12.

There are many restaurants, with fairly good food, and compared to what they charge you for shitty food in other place, it's good value too.

Sleep

There are several hotels next to each other, so it's easy to do some hotel-hopping before deciding. In high season prices double (December and January) and it's best to reserve beforehand.

Get out

If you want to leave for some more quiet beach, half an hour walking north from Montanita ou can find Olon, a huge beach usually without too many backpackers.
