Get in
Orvieto was designed to be impregnable, so the Etruscans founded it on the top of a steep hill. In order to access the town, you will have to exit the Autostrada and take a spectacular winding journey up that hill. The approach to the town is one of the most glorious things about visiting Orvieto.
If you take a bus, you will approach the same way.
Once you have reached the city walls, you are required to park your car or disembark from your bus. You must get in the rest of the way on foot.
Get around
See
The main sight in Orvieto is its wonderful black and white striped Duomo, a better companion to the Duomo of Siena. Inside the Duomo is a wonderful set of frescos by Luca Signorelli. The walled city in general is also lovely to walk around. To see: Piazza del Popolo, Saint Patrick's well, La Cava well (etruscan), Corso Cavour (with its shop and restaurants), the Medieval quarter, Saint Giovenale, Saint Giovanni and Saint Francesco churches, Albornoz rock and the surrounding promenade of the downtown.
