Understand
Peterhof was a palace built in 1725 by Peter the Great as a residence modelled on Versailles. Today the name also refers to the nearby town of 80,000. During World War II, when the palace was in German hands, it was bombed by Soviet troops when Stalin heard that Hitler was planning to celebrate New Year's Eve there, and rebuilt after the war.
