Understand
The South, or the Southern States, are generally considered to be those states that seceeded from the United States prior to the American Civil War and joined together to form the Confederate States of America in the early 1860s. However, some states that seceeded (such as Missouri) are usually not considered to be culturally a part of the South. Today, the South is defined as more of a cultural region than a geographical region, since the United States extend much further west now than they did during the War. Even though the War took place over 140 years ago, emotions relating to it still run high in this region of the United States, and there are still very sympathetic feelings toward the Confederacy.
Talk
One of the most important identifiers of the cultural South is the dialect with which its people speak. Southerners from Virginia to North Florida, and all the way out to eastern Texas speak with a very distinct accent that is different from the rest of the United States.
