Understand

Surrey is Vancouver's largest suburb in both population and area, in the near future it will have a larger population than Vancouver proper. It is one of the fastest growing parts of North America and has a large immigrant population mostly from India and other parts of Asia. Surrey is mostly a working class suburb, but it does have some of its own industry -- mostly factories and warehouses. The city has a bit of an image problem, it is often seen by other people in Greater Vancouver as a big, sometimes "trashy" sprawling suburb. Surrey has a property crime problem and was once the Car theft capital of North America.

The city is divided by North and South, mostly by demographics and ecconomics. North Surrey is for the most part middle class, while South Surrey is much more affluent. South Surrey often refered to as White Rock (which is acctualy a different city). South Surrey borders the United States and the ocean.

Get in

By skytrain

Take an Expo Line train from any downtown Vancouver Skytrain station, all the stations on the other side of the Skybridge are in Surrey. The end of the line is at the King George station which is about a 45min trip from Waterfront station in Vancouver.

By car

Both of Greater Vancouver's two major freeways (HWY99 & HWY1) run directly through Surrey, it also has two secondary highways. Highway 91 links the HWY99 with the suburb of Burnaby, and the Pacific highway links HWY1 with the USA/Canada border. King George highway is actually a major street which runs from South Surrey to North Surrey.
