Tromso (Tromsø; [1]) is in the very northernmost part of Norway. It is north of the arctic circle and is one of the best places to view the spectacular Northern Lights.

Weather in the summer is highly variable: overcast, chilly, drizzly days are interspersed with beautiful warm, sunny days.

By plane

All international and domestic flights land at the small, modern Langnes Airport (TOS).

The cheapest public transport option to the town center is public bus 42, from across the airport parking lot. The busride is about 20 minutes, and will set you back approximately 25 NOK. There is also a dedicated "Airbus" (Flybussen) that will take you straight into the town centre, only stopping at a few hotels along the way (about 45 NOK). Taxis are also available, for about 100 NOK.

There is no train. Unless you go to Narvik, and take the bus from there to Tromsø (5 hours).

Summer

• On a warm summer day, visit the beach Telegrafbukta near the Tromsø Museum. Bring a picnic or barbeque (small disposable grills, available in grocery stores, are popular here). If you dare, take a dip in the water--it may just have reached 10C/40F.
• Watch a soccer (football) match. Tromsø's team is in the Tippeliga (the highest division).
• Go fishing! You can try from the shore or even better from a boat. There is less variety of fish than in southern Norway, but the amount and the size is much better. Common fish are coalfish, cod, halibut

Learn

Most locals will be happy to teach you a few norwegian words and phrases over a few beers at one of the many pubs and bars.

Work

The University of Tromsø (UiT) and the nearby University Hospital of Tromsø (UNN) is situated at the northern end of the Tromsø island, and are the two largest workplaces in Tromsø. The Norwegian Telemedicine Centre at UNN is a WHO collaborating centre.

If you like seafood, restaurants don't get much better than Store Norske Fiskekompani on Storgata. Also, Peppermøllen, with one of northern Europe's largest menus and delicious food, is to be recommended.
