Tuscany has two very diverse faces - the art cities such as Florence, Siena, Lucca and Pisa on one hand, and the countryside on the other. The small towns, villages, castles, villas and vineyards of Tuscany make a welcome change from the traffic and noise of some of the larger Tuscan cities.

By air
International flights commonly come in to Milan or Rome, where one can rent a car and do the three-hour drive to Tuscany.
Florence and Pisa have important airports. Every major city has a railway station.

The region of Tuscany boasts 35 wines with a "Denominazione di Origine Controllata" DOC certificate, five of which have also obtained the "Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita" DOCG certificate. The DOC and DOCG denominations witness to the strong dedication of the people of this land to vinw-growing, and their deep knowledge of wine-making techiques.
Tuscany is famed for its wines, most notably Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Morellino di Scansano and Brunello di Montalcino.

For anyone planning to stay in the Tuscan countryside, "agritourism" (agriturismo) is the way to go. In broad terms this means finding your accommodation on farms and vineyards, where many farmers make additional income by renting out rooms, apartments or free-standing houses to tourists.
