Image thumbs

Moved from Wikitravel:travellers' pub by Evan

Hi, It would be nice to have the same feature as Wikipedia : image thumbs. Yann 17:39, 29 Feb 2004 (EST)

I think that's a MediaWiki 1.2 feature. I'm going to wait till 1.2 is released before rolling it out for Wikitravel. Is that OK? --Evan 18:59, 29 Feb 2004 (EST)
The French Wikipedia uses this already since a few weeks and I don't think it already use 1.2. Yann 09:33, 1 Mar 2004 (EST)
I'm pretty sure all the Wikipedias are using 1.2rc1. --Evan 14:07, 1 Mar 2004 (EST)
I didn't know that development versions of Wikimedia were used at Wikipedia. No problem to wait a bit. Yann 13:02, 6 Mar 2004 (EST)
MediaWiki 1.2's been out for a now, so when can we get our grubby hands on thumbnails? Jpatokal 23:16, 21 Jul 2004 (EDT)
We use MediaWiki 1.2.3. If you know how to enable thumbnails for 1.2.x versions, please, let me know. --Evan 02:04, 22 Jul 2004 (EDT)
Take a look here. I know little about Wiki's guts but $wgUseImageResize and following options look relevant. Jpatokal 02:42, 22 Jul 2004 (EDT)

That was the info I needed! I've enabled thumbnails for all three languages, using the internal PHP functions. Any feedback welcome. --Evan 13:34, 6 Aug 2004 (EDT)

Most excellent!!! Now I can finally start heavy-duty uploading of pictures. Two words of feedback:
  1. Can the default image size be made larger, (say) 256px?
  2. Can the border of empty space around the thumbnail be increased?

Other opinions welcome. Jpatokal 05:37, 9 Aug 2004 (EDT)

Also, this would be a good time to standardize on image size for Destination of the Month qualification, etc. Geneva and Black Rock City have the rather odd sizes of 333x250 and 361x250 pixels respectively... Jpatokal 11:23, 9 Aug 2004 (EDT)
Alsoalso, links within Image tags don't work. But this seems to be a MediaWiki 1.3 feature... Jpatokal 11:50, 17 Aug 2004 (EDT)
Now works in 1.3.5! Jpatokal 22:35, 7 Oct 2004 (EDT)

Upgrade to Mediawiki 1.3 ?

Hi,

Should WT be upgraded to Mediawiki 1.3 now that a stable version is released?

  • The new Monobook design is nice;
  • We could use the Categories;
  • The Templates ({{template}}) still do not work.

BTW, this page is over 46 KB. Yann 09:05, 24 Aug 2004 (EDT)

I'll see what I can do to fix the templates problem on French Wikitravel. I personally hate the Monobook design, but it'd be good to have an option. And the PHPTal stuff would be good for making a Wikitravel skin.
I see no reason to use categories; in fact, I think they're a really crappy hack. We need much better metadata input than that; I'm working on adding Turtle support so we can add richer metadata. Anyways, I'll probably disable categories until we've got a good plan for them.
1.3 does have the option to add a real name to your user account, and to get attribution on the pages ("This page created by X, Y, and Z"). I'll probably enable those, since it makes it a lot easier for redistributors to comply with our copyleft.
Anyways, I'll probably do a 1.3 upgrade in about 2 weeks (I'll be away next week). I'd like to get the three new language versions going at about the same time, so I only have to do 6 installs instead of 9. I'll post well ahead of time when I'm ready to go. --Evan 15:31, 24 Aug 2004 (EDT)
Personally, I'd like categories because they'd make it so much easier to navigate around geographical areas, instead of relying on region pages being up to date (which they won't be). Jpatokal 07:09, 30 Aug 2004 (EDT)

Thumbnail formatting

Given all the recent hang-wringing over link URLs, I think I need to say that the current (default) thumbnail formatting is butt-ugly. A modest proposal:

  • background from dark gray to white (same color as page itself or just a tiny bit darker)
  • a little more empty space within the thumb border
  • more empty space around thumbs on the left and bottom sides

See also Wikipedia's new thumb appearance, which doesn't look bad at all. (Although I'm fine with the magnifying glass as is.) Jpatokal 07:09, 30 Aug 2004 (EDT)

Now fixed in 1.3.5! Yay! Jpatokal 22:35, 7 Oct 2004 (EDT)

Bread crumb navigation

Moved from travellers' pub by Evan

Hi,

Is it possible to add breadcrumb-like navigation at the top of articles based on geography? For example, an article on Innsbruck, Austria (should there be one) would have a Europe -> Austria -> Tirol -> Innsbruck set of links at the top, for getting to other nearby places of intrest quickly. No big deal, but it would be nice. -- Blav

No, it'd be really nice. I posted a note on the MediaWiki mailing list about making it possible to declare relationships between articles, so you could say that Innsbruck is part of Tirol, which in turn is part of Austria, etc. I was thinking of it more for printing articles, or downloading articles to a PDA, but it'd also be great for doing breadcrumb stuff. -- Evan 09:25, 22 Nov 2003 (PST)
The new Mediawiki's Category feature, as used on Wikipedia, should allow a variant of this -- is this available/can it be enabled on Wikitravel? Jpatokal 23:12, 21 Jul 2004 (EDT)
The Template:IsIn allows this to be done by inserting {{IsIn|Place_article_name}} where the Place_article_name is the related parent article. Has this request been addressed? -- Huttite 02:48, 25 Dec 2005 (EST)

Image bank?

Moved from Wikitravel:travellers' pub by Evan

It would be nice to have a image bank for all Wikitravel editions, so we don't have to upload images for each langage of Wikitravel. Possible? Yann 11:21, 17 Feb 2004 (EST)

No, it's not. So, my big priority for the next next version of MediaWiki is to enable a single wiki supporting multiple languages. So we can use the same user accounts, images, etc. with each of the different language versions. --Evan 04:51, 18 Feb 2004 (EST)

Coordinates

By storing coordinates for the places in a structured way would make it possible to compute distances between different places and list places within a given range. Do you think it could be done?

See the coor template and the coord project -- Nic 16:25, 8 Nov 2005 (EST)

See Wikitravel:Geocoding. --Evan 16:12, 2 May 2006 (EDT)

Include last edit on spam filter failure page

Currently when the "Save page" button is clicked, if something in the edit triggers the spam filter then the next page presents a message saying that the edit was blocked, but clicking "Back" usually loses all edit information. Would it be possible to have the spam filter message page also include a textarea box with the current edit so that a user who has edited the page won't lose their changes?

Additionally, is there any way to create a "special" page that would show what articles currently would trigger the spam filter? I've had problems editing Las Vegas because the spam filter triggers while I'm editing based on information that was previously in the page. If this second feature is a lot of work then it's not important, but the first would be hugely valuable. -- Ryan 16:22, 8 March 2006 (EST)

I just did the first part, and I've broken off the idea of a special page to a new FR. --Evan 16:19, 2 May 2006 (EDT)

Design of Login page

Swept in from the Pub:

Perhaps I'm being a particular twit or perhaps my browser displays the Wikitravel login page poorly for some reason, but twice I've clicked "mail me a new password" when I meant to click "login." With Firefox 1.0.7 at least, the login page is visually confusing. It would be a lot easier if the "login" button were large and prominently placed and the other, less-used buttons were smaller and below a divider. I don't have this wrong-button problem with other websites. Chaiken 10:25, 20 Jan 2006 (EST)

This was done in the 1.6.x upgrade. --Evan 16:19, 2 May 2006 (EDT)

Recent changes links

Moved from Wikitravel:travellers' pub by Evan

Hi,

How to modify the Special:Recentchanges page to add a link to fr:Recentchanges and vice versa? Yann 07:57, 17 Feb 2004 (EST)

It works for me, but the browser I'm currently using has a Unicode link bug. Try fr:Spécial:Recentchanges. Both wikis use Unicode, so any current browser (like the Konqueror on my laptop's harddisk that has to get the fan replaced, which is actually from last year or so, but it's recent enough) should be able to handle it. -phma 09:55, 17 Feb 2004 (EST)
Still no answer to my questions. And what about link from the French Wikitravel to Wikipedia? Still not working. Thanks, Yann 11:22, 27 Feb 2004 (EST)
