Wikitravel:List of related projects Travel Guide
From Wikitravel
This is just a list, with some commentary, of some other projects that are related to Wikitravel.
For more information on how Wikitravel can cooperate with other projects see the Fellow Traveller Expedition page.
Contents |
BootsnAll.com
An independent travel Web site. They publish travelogues and travel stories, and provide trip-planning services. They also have local travel guides, maintained by individual writers, which are somewhat analogous to Wikitravel's guides. BootsnAll.com has great karma in the Internet travel community, and tends to be very positive about supporting other travel-related sites and blogs with their BootsnAll Travel Network. All content is proprietary, but it would probably be possible for BootsnAll.com to republish Wikitravel guides if they so wished.
CityVox
Proprietary traveller-written guides to cities in Europe.
CommunityTraveler
Travelogues by independent travellers from around the world.
Consumerium
see also: Cooperating with Consumerium
A project to create "a healthy buying infrastructure".
CouchSurfing
see also: Cooperating with CouchSurfing
Great and fast growing hospitality exchange network. CouchSurfing helps you make connections worldwide. You can use the network to meet people and then go and surf other members' couches!
Hospitality Club
see also: Cooperating with Hospitality Club
The largest hospitality exchange network - built in the same spirit of sharing and helping as Wikitravel. There are wiki-like travel sections on the site already.
OpenGuides
see also: Cooperating with OpenGuides
A network of free, community-maintained wiki guidebooks to places around the world, which uses custom-built OpenGuides wiki software. They don't have a lot of information about the project on their site, but it seems that their mission is somewhat different from Wikitravel's.
Trip Advisor
A traveller-written but proprietary guide including photos, with an emphasis on reviews/recommendations for hotels, restaurants, etc.
Turismo Vikio
A wiki-based travel guide, similar to Wikitravel, but in Esperanto. Not a lot of license or other information available, but may be an example of a sister site in another language (see Language version policy).
September 2006: Turismo Vikio to merge with Wikitravel - see Wikitravel talk:Esperanto Wikitravel Expedition#Contents
Where Are You Now?
A travelogue site for sharing current travels and networking with other travellers.
Wikia & World Wiki
see also: Cooperating with World Wiki
Not yet clear [1] what their goal is, but clearly a fellow traveller. See also:
- cities.wikia.com - "Towns, Villages and Cities" information
- local.wikia.com - "WikiLocal" - local guides
- tourism.wikia.com - fledgling "Topic Tourism" site, focusing on other ways of seeing travel
- travel.wikia.com - "Travel the World Wiki"
Wikia also hosts dedicated wikis for individual cities, e.g. sanfrancisco.wikia.com.
Wikigogy
A wiki for English teachers.
Wikipedia
see also: Cooperating with Wikipedia
A project to create a free encyclopedia. It was one of the models that Wikitravel was based on, and we use the software (MediaWiki) developed for Wikipedia.
Wiki Scuba
A site to describe scuba diving locations around the world.
World66
see also: Links to World66
A wiki-based Open Content travel guide, this is probably the most similar project on the Internet to Wikitravel; not coincidentally, the site was purchased by Internet Brands at the same time as Wikitravel, making it a "sister site". It's a merger of the www.CapitanCook.com project with the previously proprietary World66 site. The content is under the same license that we use (but was previously GFDL), so content sharing is an option; interlinking between the two is encouraged. Their main page says they have over 10,000 articles available, but many of their articles are at a finer level of granularity than on Wikitravel - individual attractions have articles, for example.
