Meetup.com is a Web site for coordinating meetups among people with common interests around the world. You can sign up for a meetup on a topic in your home city -- or in a city you're going to be visiting -- and plan the location and agenda (if any) for the meetup.

Wikitravel is one of the meetup.com topics; you can sign up for a Wikitravel meetup at http://wikitravel.meetup.com. Wikitravel meetups happen on the 3rd Monday of each month.

There's of course nothing "official" or "mandatory" about using meetup.com to set up real-life meetings.
