The MediaWiki software used to run Wikitravel offers the capability to automatically generate sophisticated HTML using templates. Templates should be discussed before being created or modified. The list below shows templates that are currently available.

Available Templates
The following templates can be used in articles.
Notices
Notices are short fragments of standard text that should appear on relevant pages. Most reflect an article's status. A template is used so that a standard text appears on each relevant page. This saves typing. The following notices are currently available.
Article status
These notices are used to indicated article status:

Disambiguation notices
These notices are used with disambiguation pages:

Articles needing attention
These notices are used to indicate that an article needs attention due to some problem:

Note that it is generally preferred to just remove copyrighted information and then leave a note on the talk page indicating where the content came from and why it was removed. | ||
| {{merge|destination}} | Indicates that an article does not meet the article criteria and that its content should be merged into the destination article. This notice should be placed at the top of an article. |

Collaboration of the week
These notices are used to promote articles that are collaborations of the week:

Other information notices
Informational notices provide warnings and disclaimers about hazards or other vital pieces of information that travelers should be alerted to.

| {{disclaimerbox|disclaimer}} | A disclaimer is a sparingly-used message, normally containing editorial content about policy decisions. A disclaimer should generally be discussed prior to being added to an article. |

| {{warningbox|warning}} | Used to call out information that is vital to a traveler's safety, such as recent damage from a natural disaster, political instability, or some other serious condition. Warning boxes should be sparingly used and placed either at the top of an article or within the article section that is related to the warning. |

Inserting Boilerplate Text
Wikitravel has a number of article templates that can be used to format articles. The following substitution texts can be used to quickly insert the article template into newly created articles. When the article is saved the shortcut is replaced with the text. This is a one-off substitution and can only be undone by deleting the inserted text - use with care.
- Country - Type {{subst:country}} into the edit box. - Expands into the Country article template text when saved.
- Region - Type {{subst:region}} into the edit box. - Expands into the Region article template text when saved.
- Small city - Type {{subst:smallcity}} into the edit box. - Expands into the Small city article template text when saved.
- Big city - Type {{subst:bigcity}} into the edit box. - Expands into the Big city article template text when saved.
- Huge city - Type {{subst:hugecity}} into the edit box. - Expands into the Huge city article template text when saved.
- District - Type {{subst:district}} into the edit box. - Expands into the District article template text when saved.
- Park - Type {{subst:park}} into the edit box. - Expands into the Park article template text when saved.
