By air: Merida International Airport or Cancun International Airport

By road: Yucatan has extensive well built highways, rural, state and federal roads that are saved for tourist to drive. Buslines offer unexpensive first-class routes.

Get around

Renting a car is highly recommended. Main roads are in good conditions and state maps are easy available to get at any "tourist information kiosk."

Yucatan offers many areas of interest to visitors, including famous Maya archaeological sites, sandy beach towns, Colonial cities, Natural Reserves, and adventure loaded trips to 'Cenotes', or fresh underwater sink-holes, Maya caves and small towns.

Birdwatching

Yucatan is a great place to visit for those that enjoy birdwatching. Places to visit are: Ria de Celestun, Rio Lagartos, El Cullo, Chichen Itza, and Uxmal. [1]

Do

Merida - Each night the City Hall sponsors many cultural events and regional dances through out the Historic Distric in downtown; most events are free and scheduled to start after 7:00 P.M. Inquire any of the "tourist information kiosks" within the Zocalo area. Highly recommended.

Chichen Itza - Visit the magestic Maya archaeological zone, home of the Kukulcan Pyramid, the Maya Observatory, and Sacred Cenote. There are many things to do here. Such as visiting the Maya Archaeological sites, taking time to experience a Mayan ritual at Yaxkin Spa, [[2]] or visit the Cenote Ik kil. Good shopping is found at the Toh Boutique. Also if you are into birdwatching the Bird Refuge at Hacienda Chichen is expectacular, you may find over a 100 bird species in a day by just strolling this Colonial Hacienda gardens. [3]

Cenote Dzinup - Natural underground lake formation, clear blue fresh water under a stone dome. Swiming, and diving are permited. Site near the Colonial city of Valladolid.

Cenotes at Cuzamá - Visit this quiant little town only for an incredible ride along a centuries old rail line drawn by horses. Visit three beautiful cenotes. Well worth it. The cost is $160 MXN per cart (not person!). A must see.[4]

Yucatan is well known for its exquisite and embroided "huipiles," silver "filigrana" jewelry, traditional "hammacks," and fine replicas of ancient Maya ceramic vessels.

Eat

Yucatecan coussine is well known throughout Mexico. Try the traditional "Pollo Pibil" and "Sopa de Lima."
